I read a guide for the IELTS reading text on http://elc.polyu.edu.hk/ielts/main.htm#re#01.

It had many interesting tips like:

- In the exam you should read 3 text of 400 to 900 words each.

- There is around 40 questions.

- You have 20 minutes per text to read and answer the questions. If you haven't finished one section after 17-18 minutes, make an intelligent guess at the remaining answers and go on to the next section. Remember, the sections get more difficult, so if possible, save time on the early ones.

- Remember to read the instructions carefully. If you are asked to answer a question in three words or less, don't give an answer with more words!

-On the Reading paper there are 9 different types of task:

1. Multiple choice questions
2. Completing sentences
3. Writing short answers
4. Matching headings to paragraphs
5. Completing tables, charts or diagrams
6. Matching causes and effects
7. Completing a summary
8. Choosing factors
9. Identifying the writer's view
